I’m beyond excited to share my first make for Sew me sunshine. I have been dressmaking a year and Harriet’s beautiful fabrics and patterns have inspired me to make my own clothes ever since.
For my first blog post I wanted to create a classic dress in a timeless fabric. I chose the lovely Marigold cotton poplin fabric to do the job. When I saw this fabric, it screamed out to be made into the Sew Over It Betty dress.
My happy post arrived in its usual sunny packaging and I took it straight out and washed it as per the care label card that came with the fabric. It washed so well and there was no fraying. It was air dried and it pressed well under a steam iron. I used a rotary cutter, cutting mat and pins to attach the tissue paper pattern to the fabric.
My body shape called for a size 14 against the sewing pattern. I am an F cup was a little nervous of the high neckline but thought I would take the risk. I made no bust adjustments however I did use a 1cm seam allowance on the bodice instead of the indicated 1.5cm. The fabric was a dream to sew with and hemming process was enjoyable.
I’m thrilled with my Betty I feel so happy wearing it, it has the twirl factor which I love. I needn’t have worried about the high neck line it feels lovely. Betty is now hung with pride on my me made wardrobe. I hope you feel inspired to make a Betty of your own. You can follow my sewing journey over on Instagram.

I was provided this fabric free of charge in exchange I wrote this blog post. I chose the fabric, and chose what pattern to use.
