General Product Safety Regulations (GPSR) - 2023/988

What is GPSR?

At Sew Me Sunshine we are committed to the highest standards of product safety and customer satisfaction. This is why we comply with the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR), Regulation (EU) 2023/988, which will take effect on December 13, 2024. This legislation imposes strict requirements to protect consumers and ensure that all products offered on the European market are safe for use.

The General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) 2023/988 replaces the older General Product Safety Directive (2001/95/EC) and introduces new, comprehensive requirements to further enhance the safety of consumer products. The GPSR applies to all products offered on the EU market, both physically and online, and affects manufacturers, importers, distributors, and fulfilment service providers. 

The core of the GPSR focuses on:

  • Minimising risks for consumers
  • Transparent information and warnings for users
  • Accountability for product safety across the entire supply chain
  • Strengthening traceability and recall procedures

How do we comply?

  • Our contact details and details of our EU representative will be included with every parcel that is exported to the EU and Northern Ireland
  • Our EU representative will hold a spreadsheet of our inventory for 10 years. We will update this spreadsheet on a monthly basis 
  • As we are not able to attach labels to individual fabrics as it will damage the product an invoice will be included with every parcel that will state the product names in order to ensure traceability 
  • We have contact details of all of our suppliers and are able to contact them directly in order to ensure traceability 
  • We have a product recall policy in place and staff are aware of the actions that need to take place 
  • We have labelled any high risk products such as dressmaking shears with safety warnings, these warnings will be translated into the language of the country the item(s) is being sent to 
  • We have performed a risk assessment on our products, and will continue to do so on any new product types 
  • If you require any certificates for any of the fabrics we stock, for example, GOTS certification, then please email us harriet@sewmesunshine.co.uk and we can obtain these from the supplier 
  • Our suppliers are based in the UK and the EU, and therefore compliant with REACH / REACH UK. We are not liable for any non compliance of our suppliers 
  • We have not tested our fabrics for flammability, please look at the fabric composition in each listing. We do not advise for our fabrics to be used for high risk applications such as uniforms, upholstery and so on. Make sure fabrics are kept away from heat sources
  • Our products are to be used for dressmaking purposes and we do not advise that they are used for anything else

Product Safety Warnings

This relates only to orders going to the EU and NI: Inside your order there will be an invoice that states the product names of everything you have ordered and product safety warning(s) related to your order if required. These warning(s) will be in English and we will translate them into your region's language. Below is a breakdown of our product safety warnings:

Blade Warning 
CAUTION CUT HAZARD: Sharp blade. Contact may result in injury. Always keep blades away from fingers and body. Handle with care. Only to be used by adults 18 years and over. Keep out of reach of children and vulnerable adults. 

Buttons, rivets, snaps, hooks + eyes, toggles, sequin fabric, small haberdashery items warning
CHOKING HAZARD: Small parts could result in choking. Always keep out of reach of children and vulnerable adults. 

Elastic, cord, trims and bias binding warning
STRANGULATING/ENTANGLEMENT HAZARD: elastic, cord, bias binding and other strips of materials may pose a strangulating or entanglement risk, especially to children and vulnerable adults. Always keep out of reach of children and vulnerable adults. 

Needles, pins and other small sharp sewing tools warning
RISK OF PUNCTURE WOUNDS OR INJURY: needles, pins and other small sharp sewing tools may post a risk of puncture wounds or injury if handled incorrectly. Always keep out of reach of children and vulnerable adults. 

Fabric Warning
- We have not tested our fabrics for flammability, please refer to the fabric composition in each website listing. We do not advise that our fabrics are used for high risk applications such as uniforms, upholstery and so on. Make sure fabrics are kept away from heat sources.
- STRANGULATING/ENTANGLEMENT/SUFFOCATION HAZARD: fabric may pose a strangulating, entanglement or suffocation risk, especially to children and vulnerable adults. Always keep out of reach of children and vulnerable adults.
