We're passionate about sewing and dressmaking at Sew Me Sunshine. We are taking a look at our faux fur lined corduroys and coatings and have put together some sewing tips.
What are faux fur lined fabrics?
You will find lots of jackets on the highstreet that have a faux fur or sherpa lining. At Sew Me Sunshine we have some great cotton teddy fleeces that can be used to line your garments with, but we also have some fabrics in stock that are double faced meaning that the faux fur is attached to the fabric so you don't need to add in the lining yourself.

We have a great range of corduroys that have a faux fur back and some yarn dyed plaid check coatings that also have a faux fur back.

Dressmaking projects using faux fur backed fabrics:
These fabrics tend to be made of man made fibres. They are also heavy, thick and very warm. They are ideal for sewing yourself a jacket. Patterns such as:
- I AM Patterns Delphine Jacket
- Chalk and Notch Den Jacket
- Grainline Studio Thayer Jacket
- Friday Pattern Company Ilford Jacket
- Wardrobe By Me Painter Jacket
Tip: As the fabric is thick due to being backed with faux fur we recommend thinking about going up a size in your chosen pattern.
Top Tips For Sewing with Faux Fur Backed Fabrics:
- Cut your project out in a single layer (remember to flip pattern pieces face down to cut the second piece of any that need to be mirrored)
- Pay attention to the fabric nap on the right side if it is a corduroy and on the wrong side for the faux fur back when cutting out your project
- Make sure to sharpen your scissors
- Keep scissor blades pointing in the same direction as the nap of the faux fur
- Use clips rather than pins
- Use a walking foot (it helps the fabric to feed evenly)
- Stitch in the direction of the nap
- Use a new sharp large needle
- Opt for heavy duty poppers instead of buttons
- Using scissors trim the height of the fur inside the seam allowance which will reduce bulkiness
- You have 3 options for finishing seams/hems
- Overlock the edge and fold it under for a hem, or overlock the edges and sew the pieces together and press the seams open
- Bind the edges with bias tape
- Attach a facing made of finer fabric to the edges (i.e. cotton lawn/voile)
