Kylie and the Machine Mule Tote Bag in Washed Cotton

The dream mule tote bag for all-year-round! I've chosen to make my KATM mule tote bag in two colours of our washed cotton fabrics. The colours I picked were raspberry pink and orange coral as I loved how well they went together.

I went for the standard size but the pattern also includes a maxi size too, which I might make for travelling in a heavy canvas or twill fabric.

This sewing pattern is ideal for sewists of all levels, for beginners it has some slightly challenging sewing steps like flat felled seams that you'll be super proud of and for experienced sewists it's a quick and satisfying pattern with lots of possibilities to customise.

In the pattern KATM guide you on opportunities of when to add a label which definitely gives the bag really professional finish. I chose to include one of the new Feeling Yourself Labels on the front which is a collaboration with Kylie and the Machine and Mel Stringer. And on the back I included a tiny handmade label which is in the Rainbow Mini Hands Labels from Kylie and the Machine.

Even though you might not imagine hacking a bag pattern, it is one of those patterns that is extremely hackable. You could add extra pockets, side pockets, smaller pockets for pens, lipsticks or cards etc, you could also add a button or a popper onto pockets for extra security.

And not only can you hack the practicality of it to suit your needs you can even hack it with colours, textures or prints to suit your style! Here you can see I traced out the lining drawing of the pattern and coloured in the colour-block sections - this also helped when I was cutting out my fabric pieces!

Another hack idea could be to thread a drawstring through the top of the bag before topstitching it down which would turn it into a project bag to hold your current sewing or knitting projects etc...

  • I have the mule tote but I’d really like a video tutorial. I’m a more watch and see how it’s done type of person. I don’t find the instructions are valid detailed enough . 🙁
