Luxurious Satin Jumpsuit made by Hazel and the Machine

I love any excuse to dress up fancy and thankfully my boyfriend loves eating out so it’s a match made in heaven! But with fancy meals comes great decisions; what do you wear? And this year I have been hit with the sewist bug of must sew something new for every occasion. Ooops. (I also have a super sparkly pair of heels that need an outing rather than my bedroom)

For my valentines make this year I have been heavily inspired by a black jumpsuit Mumma and the Machine has in her wardrobe- it’s the sort of garment she wears when she doesn’t know what else to wear. It’s a simple silky jersey that fits her perfectly and she feels so comfortable in, yet because of its simplicity it always works for every occasion and with everything! It’s the garment missing in my wardrobe (lol I think I say this about every single make) and I know it’ll be a staple for a long long time.

So I chose the Springe Jumpsuit from Sew Love Patterns which has this gorgeous waist detail that is super flattering. And the gathered bust is also flattering- gotta draw attention to the girls on valentines day, yes? I think so.

Now fabric is an age old question and when scrolling the Sew Me Sunshine website I was so torn, my resolve for a simple black basic was wavering. Do I choose a floral? Do I go for a lilac linen/jacquard because you know spring is coming? What should I do? Black always feels very safe but when I found the sandwashed satin, we won’t talk about the colour dilemma I then had because man they’re all so cute, I knew it was a winner. I could just see the jumpsuit in the fabric, the gorgeous sheen, the subtle drape.. Yeah I was sold in a heartbeat.

I’ve often heard from other sewists that slippery fabric is a pain to work with, which I now understand. My sewing naivety told me it was fine, just use a lot of pins- what I was not prepared for was how often the fabric would just move of its own accord. For example I lined two of the pieces up and they were totally different lengths, because of the way the fabric is woven they just have a mind of their own but could easily be coaxed back to the form they were supposed to take. And the fluff. I can’t even begin to describe the fluff. It was like my dog's shedding, except black fluff everywhere. My sewing room is coated and so are all the clothes I wore while sewing this jumpsuit. It's my sign to get a lint roller, that's for sure.

This make took me around 10 hours total, mostly because the process was so satisfying and also I just don’t know how to take a break, anyone else get the feeling? While it’s a relatively straightforward and speedy sew, the outcome is pure drama and glam (I mean look at those sleeves, can you honestly say those are the most beautiful sleeves ever? Though I’ll let you in on a secret, I accidentally sewed 2 identical sleeves but I don't think you can tell.) It’s also a really comfy jumpsuit, it’s like a second skin but with space for a food baby and plenty of dancing room which is so important for an evening outfit!

My only question now is, what do I make next?
