Wool Suiting Fabric Sewing Inspiration

We're passionate about sewing and dressmaking at Sew Me Sunshine. We have put together some sewing inspiration using our wool and wool blend suiting fabrics.

WHAT IS WOOL FABRIC?

Wool is a natural fibre made from animal hair predominately obtained from sheep. Wool fibres have a crimp - a natural wave that allows air to be trapped within the structure resulting in its natural insulating quality. There are two main types of wool fabric - woollen fabric which is characterised by a fuzzier hairier texture and coarser handle due to being made from yarns that have been carded and drawn, whereas worsted fabric is smoother in texture due to the yarns being additionally combed.

Characteristics of Wool Fabrics:

Pros:

  • Retains heat
  • Breathable
  • Wicks moisture
  • Durable
  • Dyes easily
  • Flame resistant
  • Biodegradable

Cons:

  • Shrinks easily
  • Dries slowly
  • Heavy when wet
  • Expensive
  • Can be attacked by insects
  • Concerns around animal cruelty

Suiting Weight:

Wool and wool blend suiting fabric varies in weight. You can find lightweight wool suitings (sometimes referred to as tropical weight suitings) that weigh between 200-265gsm which are great for warmer climates. An all season wool suiting weighs between 280-360gsm. A heavier weight suiting that is suitable for colder climates may weigh between 360-420gsm. Finally, you may find suiting fabrics that weigh 420-560gsm and over which tend to be used for making overcoats and tweed jackets.

Some of the above projects can be made in different suiting weights. Just remember that it will produce a different final look as heavier weight suitings are more structured whereas lighter weight ones have more drape.
